Board of Directors
Jessie is dedicated to promoting educational experiences outside the classroom and helping people find their inspiration through unforgettable international experiences. Jessie had the opportunity to experience first hand the impact that the SIA program had on herself and the participants – seeing students grow into leadership positions or return to Canada inspired to engaging in community development initiatives inspired Jessie to promote the SIA program further.
Jessie has been a member of the Board of Directors for Solidarity in Action since 2011. She was involved with the organization for several years before that through her role within the Laurier International Office at Wilfrid Laurier University. Having worked with other international volunteer programs, she decided to join the Board of Directors – she believes that that SIA program offers a unique program, focusing on sustainable development and strong, sustainable relationships with the community. Currently, Jessie is the International Agent Relations Coordinator at Royal Roads University. She is also a trainer in the International Educators Training Program course at Queen’s University.
Jessie holds a Bachelor of Arts, Honours, Political Science and a Certificate, International Education from Queen’s University. She currently lives in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Larry (Lawrence) Shuttleworth co-founded Solidarity in Action in 2006 along with his brother, Angus, and a group of other young people passionate about making a difference. They were inspired to take action after a trip to Peru where they had the opportunity to share and connect with women, men and children in developing communities.
Today, Larry is the Executive Director of SIA and a member of the Board of Directors. He works to connect Canadians with South Americans through international trips and projects that benefit both parties. He travels to South America during several months of the year, leading groups of North Americans into shantytowns, communities and cities where they have the chance to interact with local people, explore the culture and make a difference – just like Larry did during his first trip to Peru several years ago.
Larry is dedicated to promoting education in Canada and abroad. He is an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) and holds a Bachelor of Arts, Honours from Brock University, as well as a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario. Larry spent his childhood in South Africa before moving to Canada. He lives in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
Angus, along with his brother Larry and a group of other Brock University students, co-founded Solidarity in Action in 2006. Growing up in South Africa, Angus was exposed to poverty and inequality at a young age and was taught that he had the power to make a difference. Following a trip to Peru to assist in poor communities, he and the other students were inspired to take action by founding Solidarity in Action to enable other Canadians to have the same empowering experience as them. Today, Angus is a member of the Board of Directors for SIA and is also the treasurer.
Angus is the owner and founder of Angus Shuttleworth, Chartered Accountant, an accounting firm in Burlington, Ontario. A dedicated Rotarian, he is the treasurer of the Lakeshore-Burlington Rotary Club. He is also a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario and the Burlington Chamber of Commerce. An avid dragon boat athlete, Angus has travelled as far as Malaysia to compete in international races.
Angus has a Bachelor of Accounting, Honours from Brock University and has a Chartered Accountant designation. He lives in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada with his wife Rachel and their son Nolan.
Rachel’s desire to help people around the world live healthy, happy lives was sparked several years ago after volunteering in an AIDS clinic and a primary school in Mexico. Since then, she has traveled to countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America to study, volunteer, work and explore. Rachel has been a member of the Board of Directors for Solidarity in Action since 2009.
Committed to community development, Rachel is currently the Manager of Communications for the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, an organization that helps young Canadians start their own businesses. Through work and volunteering, she has contributed to projects to enable entrepreneurship in developing communities through education and the provision of income-generating farm animals. She has also helped promote awareness about agricultural best practices, maternal health, HIV/AIDS and more through information tools and services for community radio broadcasters in Africa.
Rachel has a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Communications from the University of Ottawa and a Masters in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. She lives in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada with her husband Angus and their son Nolan.
