Daily Program Itinerary

Day 1: We will depart from Toronto Pearson International Airport, Toronto, Ontario and arrive in Jorge Chavez International Airport, Lima, Peru (depending on the flight departure time). Upon arrival we will transfer to our accommodation in Lima.

Day 2: Our first full day in Peru will include a visit to downtown Lima, to explore the Plaza de Armas, local markets, and trendy restaurants. We will enjoy lunch at L’eau Vive Restaurant in Lima, and a visit to the Monastery of San Francisco. The day-visit will conclude with a visit to a Peruvian supermarket. In the evening we will have dinner within the accommodation, and daily debrief.

Day 3: The day will begin with an introduction to the Solidarity in Action program. We will receive a briefing on the country of Peru, and the city of Lima, including a brief history and an introduction into the social issues. The introduction will feature information about the project partners and placements, and will include a visit to the project partners. Lunch will be packed, and dinner will be served within the retreat house.

Day 4 to Day 8: Project placements will begin officially on Day 4, and run until Day 8. Each day, we will travel by bus, or by taxi to the placements. Placements will usually run from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Depending on the project, the placement may run until 4:00pm or 4:30pm. Lunch will be a packed lunch, and each day will conclude with Spanish classes, dinner, evening discussion, and or a cultural activity. The cultural activities could include: visit to Barranco, Miraflores and El Parque del Amor, Parque de la Reserva – The Magic Water Circuit, and community testimonies and presentations.

Day 9: Following the completion of the week of placements, you will be asked to complete the project placement summary, and any additional documentation about the project placement. The day will include a final visit to the project partner, in which you will be able to say thank you. The day will conclude with a farewell dinner and evening discussion.

Day 10: We will fly to Cuzco, Peru and upon arrival travel to our accommodation. The flight duration is just over one hour, and most flights depart from Lima to Cuzco early in the morning. Due to the altitude, we recommend that you rest, to allow you the time to acclimatize to the high altitude. Light lunch will be served within the accommodation, and in the afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore Cuzco. We will meet in the evening for dinner at one of local restaurants in Cuzco’s main square (Plaza de Armas).

Day 11: We will travel to the spectacular ruins of Machu Picchu. The guided walking tour will include visits to important Incan structures, such as the Temple of the Condor. During the afternoon you will have the opportunity to return to the ruins, hike, or visit the Incan handcraft markets. The group will meet for dinner in the town of Aguas Calientes, and will return to Cuzco in the evening.

Day 12: You will have the opportunity to explore Cuzco’s churches, markets, and restaurants, and you will have the opportunity to go horseback riding through the Andes. Horseback riding may be offered in the morning, or during the afternoon. In the evening we will enjoy our Farewell Dinner. The day may also feature a visit to a school for children who are deaf.

Day 13: We will travel from Cuzco to Toronto with a lay-over in Lima. Flights may leave from Cuzco at any time during the day. We will return to Toronto on the evening of Day 13, or in the afternoon of Day 14, depending on the flight times.
